Authorities investigate fuel theft and smuggling networks in Mexico
Authorities in Mexico are addressing various incidents of illegal hydrocarbon extraction and smuggling. In Acolman, a clandestine fuel tap was discovered in the San Bartolo neighborhood following citizen reports. Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), municipal police, and Civil Protection responded to the site to secure the connection and prevent leaks. This incident follows previous fuel theft events in the municipality, including a fatal tunnel collapse in Santa Catarina in April and the recovery of over 2,000 liters of fuel in January.
In the border region of Piedras Negras, investigations are expanding following the arrest of businessman Julio “N” in Eagle Pass for alleged money laundering. The case involves a smuggling method known as “huachicol hormiga,” where hydrocarbons are transported in tanks embedded within cargo trucks. Experts suggest this scheme bypassed customs controls and caused significant economic disruption by creating long delays at border crossings. There are concerns regarding potential collusion between smuggling networks and customs or police personnel, highlighting structural vulnerabilities in the customs system.
