Authorities investigate police conduct during Manaus eviction

The Amazonas State Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-AM) and the State Public Defender's Office (DPE-AM) are investigating the legality and police conduct during a repossession and expropriation action in the Santa Etelvina neighborhood of Manaus.

The investigation focuses on whether a formal judicial warrant existed, the circumstances regarding the use of force, and whether there were excesses during the removal of residents from Rua 7 de Maio. The Public Defender's Office has raised concerns regarding the lack of prior notification to the agency and the absence of a formal plan to relocate or provide assistance to the displaced families.

The area is designated for a social housing construction project. Following the eviction, teams began fencing the perimeter and blocking secondary access points to allow construction work to proceed. Public security teams remained on-site to protect machinery and vehicles following reports of potential threats to the construction site.
