Authorities investigate synthetic kratom linked to deaths and illegal sales
Law enforcement and health officials are investigating the sale of potent, semi-synthetic kratom compounds following reports of fatalities and illegal distribution.
In Utah, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Utah Poison Control Center reported four deaths over a four-month period linked to mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGPI) and dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine (MGM-15). These powerful compounds are often found in products deceptively marketed as herbal supplements or “kratom-free” alternatives, such as “cat’s claw” or “Buzzers” tablets. While the manufacturer of Buzzers, Exo Club, denies the presence of kratom or its compounds, officials warn these substances can lead to severe withdrawal, overdose, and death.
In Tennessee, the West Tennessee Drug Task Force conducted an undercover operation at a smoke shop in Newbern, resulting in the seizure of multiple packs of synthetic kratom. The investigation follows an undercover agent purchasing lab-created kratom from the establishment. The seized substances have been sent to a lab for testing as the investigation continues.
