Authorities restrict funeral of crime figure Franchino Pesacane to private ceremony

Authorities in Naples have ordered that the funeral of Franchino Pesacane be held privately, banning the public ceremony originally scheduled in Boscoreale. The decision was made by the Police Commissioner and supported by the Prefect of Naples, citing concerns regarding public order and security.

Officials expressed concern that a public ceremony could transform into a gathering that serves as a public celebration of a figure historically associated with organized crime in the Vesuvian area. While authorities emphasized the need to respect the family's right to mourn, they sought to prevent the ritual from becoming a display of criminal power.

Libera Campania, an anti-mafia association, expressed “great dismay” regarding the potential for a public celebration of a criminal leader. The group called on institutions to implement legal and religious measures to prevent the funeral from glorifying a person involved in criminal activities.
