Authorities seize 22 tons of illegal fireworks in Germany-Netherlands smuggling bust

Authorities in Germany and the Netherlands have dismantled a large-scale smuggling operation involving approximately 22 tons of illegal fireworks. Following an investigation that began in March, police discovered 20 tons of prohibited pyrotechnics in an ammunition bunker in Reken, Germany, intended for sale in the Netherlands. Additional seizures of 1.8 tons were made in residential areas and warehouses in Gildehaus and Reken.

Six men have been arrested in connection with the operation, including two primary suspects aged 65 and 56. Dutch police noted that the illegal trade of heavy fireworks is a component of organized crime, warning that these explosives are used not only for celebrations but also for criminal attacks and settlements.

Data from the German Federal Police highlights a significant upward trend in pyrotechnic offenses. Reported explosives-related crimes at German borders have increased more than fivefold since 2020, rising from 191 incidents to over 1,000 annually. The Association of the Pyrotechnic Industry (VPI) emphasized that illegal pyrotechnics represent a year-round security threat rather than a seasonal issue limited to New Year's Eve.
