Authorities warn of nonphysical domestic abuse and coercive control
Authorities and health experts are highlighting the nonphysical spectrum of domestic abuse, warning that coercive control and psychological manipulation often precede or exist without physical violence.
The Isle of Man Constabulary is using Domestic Abuse Awareness Month to urge the public to recognize signs such as jealousy, monitoring messages, and making a partner feel guilty for saying no. The force is working with Victim Support Isle of Man to provide resources and support for those experiencing or concerned about abuse.
In the United States, the Defense Health Agency-Public Health is urging military members and families to recognize the broader spectrum of abuse to maintain unit and family readiness. Data from the Department of War’s Fiscal Year 2024 report on domestic abuse in the military documented 8,076 incidents. Of these verified cases, 68.2% involved physical abuse, while 25.6% were classified as emotional or psychological abuse. Experts note that abusive patterns often include stalking, digital tracking, financial restriction, and social isolation.
