Authorities warn of rising phishing and fraud scams in Hungary and Slovakia

Authorities and service providers in Hungary and Slovakia are issuing warnings regarding various phishing and fraud schemes targeting citizens.

MVM Next in Hungary has reported an increase in fraudulent SMS and email messages. These scams often use high-pressure tactics, such as threatening service disconnection or promising prizes, to trick individuals into revealing personal information, passwords, or credit card details. The company advises customers to be wary of suspicious links, unusual sender addresses, and aggressive language.

In Slovakia, police have warned of a scam involving emails sent in the name of health insurance companies. These messages claim the recipient is entitled to a refund due to an overpayment, prompting them to click a link to approve the transaction. Police spokesperson Roman Hájek noted that these links lead to fake websites designed to steal banking and personal data. Additionally, authorities highlighted a separate trend where scammers impersonate police officers to target elderly individuals via telephone, attempting to convince them to move cash to safe locations.
