Authorities warn of rising virtual scams and investment fraud

Authorities and financial institutions are issuing warnings regarding various virtual scam modalities targeting consumers.

In Tandil, the Municipal Office of Consumer Information (OMIC) has alerted the public to a digital version of the “uncle” scam. Criminals pose as interested buyers on social media platforms to purchase listed items. They often claim to have made a transfer or deposit but then allege they sent an incorrect, higher amount, pressuring the seller to refund the difference immediately. OMIC emphasizes that a transfer receipt does not guarantee funds have been credited and advises users to verify bank movements personally before returning any money.

Separately, Banco Provincia (BAPRO) has warned of a scam involving fake investment advisors. These criminals use social engineering to promise high returns, eventually seeking control over victims' accounts. Common tactics include requesting that users share their screens or install remote access applications under the guise of technical assistance. Once access is gained, scammers can observe security codes and direct transfers to their own accounts. They may also display fictitious platforms showing fake profits to encourage further investment, later requesting more money to resolve alleged administrative or tax issues when victims attempt to withdraw funds.
