Autism awareness: Teacher training in Brazil and academic success in Mexico

In Brazil, the Municipal Department of Special Education (Semed) and the Specialized Autism Spectrum Care Center (Naetea) organized a training session for municipal school professionals. Neuropediatrician Rafael Aguilar led a lecture titled ‘Clinical characteristics of autism in children and how to think about diagnosis’ to assist teachers, mediators, and caregivers in identifying signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Aguilar highlighted key indicators such as speech delays, social communication difficulties, rigid behaviors, and sensory sensitivities to facilitate earlier and more accurate clinical referrals.

In Mexico, 11-year-old Adhara Pérez Sánchez, who was diagnosed with ASD at age three, has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement. Despite facing bullying and social exclusion in early schooling, she completed high school by age six. Currently pursuing a master's degree in Engineering at the Technological University of Mexico, she aims to work for NASA and pursue a career in space exploration.
