Autism diagnosis debate intensifies over rising case numbers

A debate is intensifying regarding the definition and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While the number of recorded autism diagnoses has risen sharply—increasing from approximately 700,000 to 1.1 million in England over the last three years—experts are divided on the causes.

Professor Dame Uta Frith, a prominent autism researcher, has raised concerns regarding potential misdiagnosis. She suggests that some individuals may be wrongly identified as autistic, expressing worry that those requiring significant support might be overlooked. However, her views have faced criticism from some researchers and charities, who label them as ‘misinformation’ that could pit different groups of autistic people against one another.

The National Autistic Society (NAS) maintains that evidence points toward significant underdiagnosis, particularly among women and older populations. The discourse highlights a tension between viewing autism as a diverse identity or ‘superpower’ and the clinical necessity of accurate diagnosis for those requiring intensive care.
