Autism: Historical evolution and practical management workshops
The concept of autism has evolved significantly since Swiss psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler first coined the term to describe individuals with schizophrenia who withdrew into themselves. Historically, descriptions by figures such as Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger heavily influenced the understanding of the condition. In the 1950s, specialized education emerged, though early theories incorrectly attributed autism to maternal behavior rather than biological origins. A major milestone occurred in 1980 when early childhood autism was included as a distinct diagnosis in the DSM-III.
In Waalwijk, Netherlands, a workshop titled ‘Autisme en altijd aanstaan’ is scheduled for November 19, 2026. The session aims to address the sensation of being constantly “on,” where individuals struggle to process sensory stimuli and find mental rest. The workshop is designed for people with autism, as well as their parents and partners, to provide practical tools for managing overstimulation and gaining better insight into the condition.
