Autism spectrum disorder: Early signs and therapeutic goals

Medical experts are highlighting the importance of recognizing early signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and understanding the primary goals of therapy. Speech and language therapist Serkan Demir notes that the primary objective of therapy for children with autism is not merely teaching speech, but establishing joint attention. He emphasizes that a child's inability to speak may not be solely due to autism, but rather difficulties in social communication.

Dr. Melek Gözde Luş, a child and adolescent psychiatry specialist at NPİSTANBUL Hospital, states that early signs can often be observed around 1.5 years of age. Key indicators include a lack of response when called by name, failure to engage in social smiling, and a lack of interest in interactive games like peek-a-boo. Other signs include not looking toward pointed objects or failing to show expected interest in people and events.

While language development varies across the spectrum, difficulties can manifest as a total lack of speech, delayed speech, or the inability to use language appropriately for social communication, even if verbal skills are present.
