Autism studies reveal family trait spectrum and common comorbidities

A recent review by researchers at the University of Jinan and the Yinan County Special Education Experimental Kindergarten in China examined the so‑called expanded phenotype of autism. They found that some parents, siblings or other relatives of people with autism display mild autistic‑like characteristics—such as heightened rigidity, difficulty interpreting social cues and atypical emotional expression—without meeting diagnostic criteria. Psychologist Ainhoa Martín cautioned that “talking about an expanded phenotype does not mean those people have autism or need a diagnosis,” but that these traits can affect everyday family interactions and increase stress.

Clinical guidance also stresses that children and adolescents with autism frequently present additional medical and psychiatric conditions that can intensify behavioural challenges. Common comorbidities include irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disability, epilepsy, gastrointestinal problems and obesity. Proper assessment must separate these treatable issues from core autistic symptoms and involve specialist referral when needed.
