Autistic communication experiences offer lessons for human relationships

Insights from autistic individuals offer valuable lessons for improving general human relationships and communication. Experts suggest that effective connection often requires moving beyond verbal language, instructions, or eye contact to observe subtle signals such as movement, rhythm, and pauses.

Paulina Kuraitienė, head of 'Augu kartu' and a DIR®Floortime expert, notes that communication begins long before words are spoken, through actions and expressions. Lina Sasnauskienė, head of the Lithuanian autism association 'Lietaus vaikai', emphasizes that the absence of verbal speech does not mean a child has nothing to say or does not wish to interact. She advises parents to recognize and respond to the unique communicative signals children use to establish a shared rhythm.
