Autistic teen Rhys Boardman found in Birmingham after three‑day search

Sixteen‑year‑old Rhys Boardman, who has autism and ADHD, vanished on 19 July while on a family holiday at Talacre Beach Resort near Rhyl, North Wales. He left the caravan for a familiar walk, became disoriented, and attempted to travel back to his home in St Helens, carrying only £2 and no mobile phone. Over nearly three days he rode buses and trains without tickets, slept rough in parks and bins, and survived on a tin of vegetable soup.

Rhys was discovered exhausted and dehydrated at a police station in Birmingham, where he finally asked for help. His mother, Siobhan Boardman, described the panic and frantic search that involved North Wales Police, hundreds of volunteers, and the local community. The incident highlighted the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals during emergencies and the coordinated response of authorities and volunteers across Wales and England.
