Autoeuropa plant in Portugal resumes production on Aug 24 amid remodel for future EV

The Autoeuropa automobile factory in Palmela, Portugal, is undergoing a remodel of its assembly line and paint shop and will resume production on 24 August. The plant experienced several shutdown periods – a vacation break from 1‑11 June, a lay‑off from 14‑21 July, a second vacation from 25 July‑16 August and a further lay‑off from 17‑23 August – to allow the modernization.

During lay‑off periods workers are paid 100 % of their salary and shift allowance, as stipulated in a labour agreement signed in February. The agreement, approved in February 2024, provides wage increases of 2.8 % from February and 2.5 % from October, with a minimum €50 rise, plus higher performance bonuses and attendance premiums. Rogério Nogueira, coordinator of the Autoeuropa Workers’ Committee, said the deal is of great importance for employees amid automotive sector instability.

The remodel prepares the plant to produce Volkswagen’s new electric model ID Every1, slated to start production at the end of 2027. Until then the factory will continue to build the T‑Roc, one of Volkswagen Group’s best‑selling models.
