Autoliitto urges tax cuts to combat high fuel prices in Finland

The Automobile Association (Autoliitto) is calling for urgent government intervention to address rising fuel prices in Finland, which have reached nearly 2.4 euros for 95-octane gasoline and 2.6 euros for diesel.

Autoliitto CEO Pasi Nieminen criticized the current political discourse as a “political drama” and urged decision-makers to move beyond debate toward concrete relief for households and businesses. The association proposes lowering excise taxes on gasoline and diesel for a fixed period, such as six months, to prevent high prices from becoming a permanent inflationary norm.

Additionally, the association recommends freezing the scheduled increase of the renewable fuel distribution mandate, which is set to rise from 19.5 percent this year to 22.5 percent in 2027 and 31 percent in 2028. They also suggest doubling the usage tax for diesel passenger cars. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stated that the government is currently seeking solutions to address the situation.
