Automakers and tech firms push battery recycling standards and data-driven vehicle services

CATL has launched the Global Energy Circular Economy Alliance with leading carmakers—including BMW, Renault and Volvo—and technology firms such as Google and Xiaomi. Coordinated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the partnership aims to create uniform industry standards for the full lifecycle of electric‑vehicle batteries, from usage tracking to refurbishment and recycling, with a guide expected by 2027.

At the same time, industry analysts highlight that data has become the automotive sector's most valuable resource. Modern vehicles generate continuous streams of information from sensors, cameras and connectivity systems. The EU’s Data Act and related regulations seek to define ownership of this data, while companies like Google are expanding platforms such as Android Automotive to manage vehicle functions beyond infotainment. Control of vehicle data is poised to shape new revenue models, safety improvements and broader mobility services.
