Automakers deploy humanoid robots to boost factory productivity

Major automakers, including BMW, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, and Tesla, are increasingly deploying humanoid robots in their manufacturing facilities to enhance productivity and operational flexibility. These pilot programs utilize various models, such as Figure AI’s Figure 02 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, to handle logistical tasks like moving components and towing carts.

At the Spartanburg facility, the Figure 02 robot assisted in the production of over 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles over a ten-month period, manipulating approximately 90,000 parts. While these advancements represent a shift toward ‘Physical AI’ in logistics, the technology still faces industrial hurdles and performance gaps compared to human workers.

The rise of automation has also sparked debates regarding the economic implications of a robot-driven workforce. As AI and robotics potentially replace human roles in offices and factories, discussions have emerged concerning the loss of income tax revenue and the feasibility of implementing taxes on robots to offset the impact of automation on the labor market.
