Automakers explore electrification and sustainable fuels to reduce emissions
Automakers are pursuing diverse strategies to reduce carbon emissions through both electrification and alternative fuels.
Volvo is focusing on the full life cycle of its electric vehicles, analyzing impacts from raw material extraction to recycling. The new Volvo EX60, despite being a larger model, achieves a carbon footprint of 23 tons of CO2 over its lifetime, matching the footprint of the smaller EX30. This reduction is attributed to manufacturing innovations such as aluminum mega casting for the rear structure, cell-to-body battery integration, increased use of renewable energy, and higher percentages of recycled materials.
Meanwhile, Mazda is testing sustainable non-fossil fuels to decarbonize existing internal combustion engine vehicles. Using a 100% agricultural waste-based fuel from Coryton Fuels, a Mazda MX-5 Roadster completed a 1,000-mile test drive across the United Kingdom. The test demonstrated that the vehicle's performance and fuel economy remained unchanged, suggesting that sustainable fuels could provide a solution for the millions of combustion cars remaining on the road during the transition to electric mobility.
