Automakers implement simulated gear shifting in performance EVs
Automakers are increasingly implementing simulated gear shifting in high-performance electric vehicles to replicate the tactile engagement and auditory feedback of internal combustion engines. Hyundai led this trend with its Ioniq 5 N, which utilizes the N e-Shift system to mimic engine sounds and gear change jolts.
Porsche has developed a similar E-Shift system for the Taycan, and BMW plans to incorporate a comparable solution in its upcoming electric M3, expected in 2027. This shift addresses the perceived loss of driving excitement caused by the seamless, uninterrupted torque delivery of electric motors, which lacks the rhythmic mechanical feedback found in traditional manual or dual-clutch transmissions.
