Automakers pivot to Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREV)

Automakers are increasingly investing in Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREV) to bridge the gap between traditional internal combustion engines and fully electric vehicles. Unlike standard hybrids, EREVs use electric motors to drive the wheels exclusively, while a gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery when levels are low.

This technology aims to solve consumer concerns regarding limited driving range and insufficient charging infrastructure, particularly for long-distance travel or heavy towing. Most EREVs are expected to offer between 120 and 240 kilometers of purely electric driving, supplemented by several hundred additional kilometers of range provided by the gasoline generator.

Several major manufacturers have announced plans to enter this market by 2028. Ram intends to launch its '1500 Ramcharger' truck in the first half of 2027, boasting a total range of up to 690 miles. Other companies preparing EREV models include Hyundai, Genesis, Ford, Jeep, and Scout Motors. While the technology offers a potential solution for the transition to electrification, challenges remain regarding high consumer price points and the complexity of explaining the system to drivers.
