Automakers Rebalance EV Plans as Chinese Exports Reach Record

Global automakers are reassessing their electric‑vehicle roadmaps, with several brands delaying or canceling pure‑EV programmes and shifting focus toward models that match regional demand and profitability. Hybrids and internal‑combustion vehicles are being retained longer, especially in North America, while companies invest in next‑generation technologies.

Chinese manufacturers set a new monthly vehicle‑export record, led by BYD, Geely and Chery, expanding sales across Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. The surge pressures legacy brands to accelerate software development and cost cuts, even as trade‑policy reviews continue. At the same time, the rapid growth of connected, autonomous and AI‑driven car features raises new privacy concerns, with drivers’ location and behaviour data widely collected and solutions such as stealth licence‑plate covers being explored.
