Automakers replace manual oil dipsticks with digital sensors
Automobile manufacturers are increasingly replacing traditional metal oil dipsticks with digital sensor systems. Instead of manually checking oil levels under the hood, drivers in many newer models can now view oil status directly on central dashboard screens.
Industry representatives from companies such as Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz USA state that this shift is driven by changing consumer habits. They argue that modern drivers do not prioritize manual inspections and that digital sensors provide more consistent data, as manual checks can be affected by engine temperature, vehicle angle, or user error.
However, experts and mechanics have raised concerns regarding this transition. While digital systems aim to reduce maintenance errors, such as overfilling or using incorrect oil types, they also limit a driver's ability to perform independent inspections. There are specific safety warnings for hybrid vehicles, where manual intervention near high-voltage electrical systems may pose increased risks.
