Automatic transmission maintenance and driving habits

Drivers transitioning from manual to automatic vehicles should adopt specific maintenance and driving habits to prevent costly gearbox damage. Because automatic transmissions are complex and expensive to repair, avoiding certain common mistakes is essential for longevity.

One major error is driving with two feet. Using both the left and right feet to control the pedals can lead to accidental simultaneous pressing of the accelerator and brake, which complicates vehicle control and can cause sudden, dangerous stops. Drivers are advised to use only the right foot for both acceleration and braking, keeping the left foot away from the pedal area.

Another problematic habit is shifting into neutral (N) while the vehicle is in motion, such as when driving down hills. While some believe this saves fuel, it does not provide significant benefits in modern cars and can reduce control. Frequent or unnecessary shifting into neutral, especially at high speeds, can place excessive stress on the transmission system.
