Automatic transmission maintenance and proper parking techniques

Proper maintenance and usage of automatic transmissions are critical to preventing expensive mechanical failures. Experts highlight two key areas of concern for drivers: parking procedures and fluid maintenance.

When parking on an incline, drivers often rely solely on the ‘P’ (Parking) position. This engages a mechanical component called a parking pawl to block the system. If the vehicle's full weight rests on this part rather than the brakes, it can cause significant strain and a jarring sensation when shifting gears later. To avoid damage, drivers should bring the vehicle to a complete stop, engage the parking brake first, and then shift into ‘P’.

Additionally, there is a debate regarding transmission fluid longevity. While some manufacturers suggest that transmission oil does not require periodic changes, mechanic Juan José Ebenezer argues that all automatic transmissions require regular maintenance. He emphasizes that regardless of manufacturer claims, components still experience wear, and drivers should proactively check and replace fluids and filters to prevent system failure.
