Automation threatens growth in US cleaning services workforce

The cleaning services sector is experiencing a market paradox where service demand is rising while job growth remains stagnant. While the cleaning services market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6%, employment in the field is expected to see much slower growth.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, janitorial roles are projected to grow by only 2% through 2034, a rate slower than the average for most other occupations. Although there are approximately 2.45 million cleaning jobs and an estimated 351,300 annual openings, most of these positions are required to replace workers who are retiring or changing careers rather than to meet new demand.

Automation is identified as a primary factor contributing to this employment stagnation. While new cleaning technologies threaten to displace workers, the high cost of deploying such automation at scale remains a significant barrier for many businesses.
