Automotive color trends shift toward neutral tones

Research conducted in the United States reveals a significant shift in automotive color preferences over the last 30 years. While vibrant colors like red and green were prominent in 1996, the modern market is now dominated by neutral tones.

In 1996, black, white, and gray tones accounted for approximately 47% of vehicle preferences. Today, the market share for these grayscale colors has surged to over 80%.

Several factors contribute to this trend. The dominance of achromatic tones is driven by the high resale value and risk management benefits of neutral colors, which tend to sell faster in the second-hand market. Additionally, corporate and fleet management preferences for white and gray vehicles have further increased the prevalence of these colors on the road.
