Automotive experts warn of risks regarding automation complacency
Experts are raising concerns regarding automation complacency, a phenomenon where drivers overestimatethe capabilities of automotive software and become overly dependent on it. This lack of attention can lead to dangerous situations when technology fails or is not engaged as expected.
In a recent incident in Palo Alto, California, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered fractures and a concussion after his vehicle veered into oncoming traffic. Shanahan reported that while he was reaching for a dropped mobile phone, he assumed the autonomous driving system was active; however, the camera-based system was not engaged.
While manufacturers aim to develop fully autonomous vehicles that allow passengers to work or sleep, legal and safety hurdles remain. Tesla has recently begun offering paid trips in its Cybercab, a vehicle designed without a steering wheel or brake pedals, though such vehicles are not yet legal for private sale to individuals.
