Automotive industry debates electric vehicles and technological neutrality
The automotive industry faces diverging paths regarding decarbonization and technological standards. In Europe, a debate is unfolding within the European Parliament concerning the 2035 ban on internal combustion engines. Some representatives, such as Massimiliano Salini of Forza Italia, advocate for technological neutrality to include biofuels and other alternatives, citing that electric vehicle penetration is currently too low to meet established targets without risking deindustrialization. Conversely, MEP Annalisa Corrado argues that prioritizing electric vehicles is essential for maintaining industrial competitiveness, job security, and strategic independence.
In Brazil, industry leaders at the Summit Futuro da Mobilidade 2026 discussed the challenges of producing highly technological and connected vehicles. Executives from GWM, GAC Brasil, Anfavea, and HPE Brasil highlighted the pressure to adapt to rapid electrification and connectivity trends, especially with the entry of modern Asian manufacturers. While the industry faces difficulties in finding local suppliers with advanced technologies, experts emphasize the need for the entire supply chain to modernize to maintain a competitive industrial hub.
