Automotive industry faces consolidation and tech adoption challenges

The global automotive market is characterized by significant consolidation, with a few major corporations controlling numerous brands. In Europe, Stellantis leads with over 14 brands, including Peugeot, Fiat, and Jeep, followed by the Volkswagen Group, which manages brands such as Audi, Porsche, and Skoda. While some manufacturers like Tesla and BMW operate with more independence, the industry landscape is largely defined by these massive conglomerates.

Simultaneously, manufacturers are facing challenges regarding consumer demand for specific high-tech features. According to the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Tech Experience Index, which surveyed 68,000 vehicle owners, there is a disconnect regarding passenger-side displays. The study found that 35 percent of owners have never used the passenger screen, and only 6 percent use it during every trip. Additionally, these displays are associated with an average of 21.3 malfunctions or software issues per 100 vehicles.
