Automotive industry faces vehicle repair costs and engine recalls

In China, an electric SUV owner reported a total loss after a small plastic pin connecting the battery casing to the fender broke. Because the battery pack is designed with an IP68 waterproof rating, the manufacturer stated the unit cannot be repaired or have the pin replaced individually, requiring a full battery assembly replacement costing approximately 130,000 yuan. The specific plastic pin is reportedly available on e-commerce platforms for roughly 89 yuan.
Separately, Toyota is conducting a large-scale recall of over 250,000 Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs due to potential engine defects. To manage costs and efficiency, the company has implemented a specialized inspection process using a small plastic hammer. By measuring the vibration frequency transmitted through the engine when the hammer strikes the pulley, technicians can assess the condition of the number 1 main bearing without disassembling the engine. This method aims to identify components damaged by manufacturing debris while avoiding unnecessary engine replacements.
