Automakers urge U.S. Congress to ban Chinese vehicles and software
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), a major trade group representing companies such as General Motors, Ford, Toyota, and Stellantis, has formally requested that the U.S. Congress pass legislation to ban the import, manufacture, sale, and resale of Chinese-made vehicles, hardware, and software.
In a letter to congressional leaders, AAI President and CEO John Bozzella cited national security concerns, describing Chinese connected vehicles as potential surveillance tools. The group argues that Chinese manufacturers benefit from unfair trade practices, including government subsidies and intellectual property theft, allowing them to flood global markets with low-cost, highly connected vehicles.
The request aligns with the proposed Connected Vehicle Security Act, which was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee. This bill aims to prohibit vehicles from manufacturers where Chinese shareholders hold more than a 15% stake. The AAI is urging lawmakers to finalize these bans before the end of the current legislative session to counter China's strategy of dominating global automotive production.
