Aston Martin considers future of manual transmissions

The automotive industry is seeing a significant shift away from manual transmissions toward automatic systems, driven by the rise of hybrid and electric vehicles. While manual gearboxes are becoming increasingly rare, some manufacturers are considering how to maintain them.

Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark has indicated that the company is weighing several options, including true manual transmissions, simulated manual systems, or a complete move to automatic gearboxes. A primary technical challenge is integrating manual gearboxes with modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Hallmark noted that reconciling manual controls with features like adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance presents a significant engineering and financial hurdle.

In Europe, regulatory changes are also reflecting this trend. Spain has announced that starting in 2029, drivers will be able to pass tests in automatic vehicles and later qualify for manual driving after additional training, facilitating a smoother transition as automatic technology becomes the standard.
