Automotive industry shifts toward digital touch interfaces

Automotive manufacturers and software developers are increasingly shifting toward digital interfaces, prioritizing touchscreens and voice commands over physical controls.

Google is developing a new ‘Quick Settings’ menu for Android Auto, as revealed in beta code analysis. Inspired by smartphone design, the interface allows users to manage settings like ‘Do Not Disturb’ profiles through icons similar to those on Android phones. This redesign aims to reduce driver distraction by providing a more intuitive way to access functions without needing to interact directly with a smartphone.

Similarly, BMW is reducing the number of physical buttons and knobs in its next generation of vehicles, such as the new iX3. Many frequent functions, including climate control, are being moved to the central touchscreen. Vikram Pawah, CEO of BMW Group Australia, stated that younger drivers, specifically those under 45, prefer touch and voice interfaces due to their familiarity with multitasking and rapid interaction. However, this trend faces scrutiny from safety organizations and independent tests, which suggest that increased screen reliance can negatively impact driving focus.
