Automotive industry shifts toward diverse fuels and advanced aerodynamics

The automotive industry is navigating a complex transition regarding propulsion and aerodynamics. While decade-old predictions suggested a rapid shift to exclusively electric or hydrogen vehicles, the current landscape remains diverse, including fossil fuels, LPG, hybrids, and hydrogen fuel cells. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects global electric vehicle sales to exceed 20 million units, representing over a quarter of new car sales, though no single propulsion method has achieved total dominance.

In parallel, manufacturers are focusing on aerodynamic efficiency to manage changing emission and fuel consumption regulations. A recent patent filed by Ferrari with the USPTO reveals advancements in active aerodynamics. The patent describes a radical mid-engine hypercar featuring Formula 1-inspired ventilation and an extendable rear spoiler that could create an active ‘long tail’ effect. These aerodynamic technologies, including potential modifications to the Purosangue model, may eventually reach broader commercial markets to improve vehicle efficiency.
