Automotive industry trends in vehicle design and history

The automotive industry is seeing a shift in design and manufacturing priorities. Modern car manufacturers are increasingly omitting fog lights from new models, even in high-end versions. Examples of vehicles lacking separate front fog lights include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Citroën C5 Aircross, and Volkswagen T-Roc. While some models like the Toyota RAV4 still utilize LED versions, the trend suggests manufacturers are simplifying front-end construction to reduce costs and complexity by eliminating extra modules, wiring, and mounting hardware not strictly required by EU regulations.

Historically, vehicle design has also been shaped by wartime necessity. The Willys MB, a precursor to the modern Jeep, saw mass production begin 85 years ago following a government order for 16,000 vehicles. This production helped sustain the company during the war effort. Design elements from early models, such as the placement of headlights below the hood to protect them during off-road use, have influenced subsequent vehicle engineering.
