Automotive industry wealth shifts toward Asian EV leaders

The automotive sector is seeing a significant shift in wealth distribution, with fortunes increasingly tied to Asian conglomerates and electric vehicle (EV) production. Elon Musk remains the wealthiest figure in the industry, with an estimated net worth of $864.1 billion spanning Tesla and SpaceX.

In Europe, Stefan Quandt holds a $24.4 billion fortune primarily through his stake in BMW. Asian leaders are also prominent due to the rise of EVs; Lei Jun of Xiaomi and Wang Chuanfu of BYD both hold estimated fortunes of $21.6 billion. Additionally, Eric Li Shufu of Geely possesses $15.5 billion, controlling brands such as Volvo and Lotus.

In Italy, Piero Ferrari maintains a central role in the industry with an estimated $8.6 billion net worth, controlling 10% of Ferrari. The global EV market continues to expand, with 2025 projections suggesting electric vehicle sales have surpassed 20 million units, accounting for one-quarter of global production.
