Automotive market trends show decline in convertibles and shifts in used car demand
The automotive market is experiencing significant shifts in consumer preferences and model availability. Data from AutoUncle indicates a sharp decline in the popularity of convertible vehicles. While convertibles accounted for 4.2% of new vehicle registrations in 2008, that figure has dropped to 1.2% today. This decline is particularly evident in the used car market, where models like the VW Beetle Cabriolet and Audi A3 Cabriolet have seen used sales plunges of 80% and 73% respectively.
Despite the shrinking market for affordable convertibles, the segment for high-end luxury models is growing. Used sales for the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet rose by 77%, and the BMW M4 Cabriolet saw a 91% increase. While the median price for used convertibles has risen from €20,990 to €26,500 between 2021 and 2026, they remain relatively more affordable compared to the overall used car market, which saw a median price increase from €16,450 to €21,400 in the same period.
In the budget segment, mechanic and social media personality Juan José Ebenezer has recommended specific reliable used models for under €3,000, including the Dacia Sandero (1.5 diesel), Toyota Yaris (models from 2006–2009), and various Peugeot models such as the 206, 207, and 307 with HDI engines.
