Automotive market faces rising costs and shifting consumer trends

The global automotive market is facing significant shifts driven by rising costs, changing consumer habits, and technological transitions. In Europe, car owners are seeing a dramatic surge in maintenance expenses. A study by the German Insurance Association (GDV) revealed that spare parts prices have increased by over 80 percent since 2016, with an annual growth rate of 5.9 percent, far outpacing general inflation.

In Serbia, the market is recovering from the pandemic, with new vehicle registrations growing by 23 percent. There is a notable shift toward hybrid vehicles, which now hold a 44.76 percent market share, while diesel engine popularity is declining. Chinese manufacturers are becoming increasingly prominent in the region, offering a wide range of hybrid and electric models.

In the United States, consumers are dealing with high vehicle prices and rising interest rates by keeping older cars longer and extending loan terms to as many as eight years. This trend increases the risk in the $1.7 trillion auto-credit market. Despite these pressures, brand loyalty remains high for manufacturers like Toyota, Ford, and Porsche. However, economic strain is also leading some American drivers to delay essential maintenance to save money.

Additionally, the industry faces structural risks, such as the bankruptcy of major retailers like the German dealership König, which threatens the investments of customers who have already paid deposits for new vehicles.
