Automotive market shifts as Chinese EV brands expand in Europe

The automotive landscape is undergoing significant shifts driven by Chinese manufacturers and changing consumer habits. In Poland, Chinese brands have reached a record 15.5% market share as of July 2026. This growth has led to increased competition, with some dealers offering deep discounts on 2024 and 2025 models from brands like MG, Omoda, and Jaecoo to clear inventory. While 59% of Polish companies are open to purchasing Chinese vehicles for fleets, concerns remain regarding service availability and parts. This is mirrored in the insurance sector, where the rapid influx of Chinese vehicles has led to a surge in reported claims. In the Netherlands, the insurer Univé has begun refusing insurance for certain Chinese brands, such as Hongqi and Leapmotor, citing insufficient service networks and spare parts availability.

Technological advancements are also accelerating. Geely Auto Group is preparing to showcase AI-driven ultra-fast charging technology capable of reaching 2.2 MW, potentially charging batteries from 10% to 70% in just four minutes. Meanwhile, BYD has introduced the ETT 44 electric heavy-duty truck, featuring a 1.5 MW charging system designed to charge from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes.

In other markets, consumer trends show high reliability for Japanese brands; a study of 395 million vehicles found Toyota and Lexus lead in the probability of reaching 400,000 km. On Cyprus, Kia dominates the market with a 16% share, outperforming Toyota and Nissan.
