Automotive safety: Avoiding theft traps and understanding dashboard icons

Automotive safety and security involve both physical theft tactics and understanding vehicle dashboard indicators.

A common theft method involves placing a rigid plastic bottle between a car tire and the wheel arch. This causes a noise that prompts the driver to exit the vehicle in a panic, often leaving the engine running and the door open. This allows accomplices to quickly steal valuables or the entire vehicle. Drivers are advised to inspect their wheels before entering and to turn off the engine and remove the keys if they hear unusual noises.

Additionally, some vehicles display a shoe-shaped icon on the dashboard. This is not a malfunction indicator but a safety prompt, typically found in cars with automatic transmissions. The symbol instructs the driver to press a specific pedal, such as the brake, before the vehicle can start the engine or shift gears. This mechanism is designed to prevent unintended movement during maneuvers.
