Automotive safety: New EU brake light mandates and Mercedes-Benz recall

The European Union is introducing new safety regulations for passenger vehicles. Starting July 7, 2026, all newly registered cars must be equipped with adaptive brake lights. This system is designed to reduce accidents by causing the brake light to flash rapidly during emergency braking at speeds exceeding 50 km/h. According to the VDA, this can shorten driver reaction times by 0.2 seconds and reduce braking distances by up to 5.5 meters at 100 km/h.

Separately, Mercedes-Benz has initiated a global recall affecting 23,606 GLE models (Series 167) manufactured between August 29, 2022, and September 3, 2025. The recall, which includes nearly 6,772 vehicles in Germany, addresses a defect where a poorly mounted shield in the engine compartment can rub against and damage a fuel line. This issue poses a risk of fuel leaks and sudden loss of engine power, which could lead to accidents in heavy traffic.
