Automotive child detection systems show reliability gaps in safety tests

A study conducted by ADAC and ÖAMTC has evaluated the reliability of Child-Presence-Detection systems in four modern vehicle models: the Mercedes-Benz CLA, BMW iX3, BYD Seal, and Zeekr 001. The testing aimed to determine how effectively these systems prevent the dangers of children or animals being left in hot vehicles.

The investigation highlighted two distinct technological approaches. The Mercedes-Benz CLA utilizes an indirect system that monitors seatbelt buckles, seat occupancy, and door openings. While this system successfully issued warnings in all tested scenarios, it could not definitively confirm if a child was actually present, and its alerts were limited to the central display without acoustic or visual external signals.

In contrast, the BMW, BYD, and Zeekr models employ direct detection systems using radar sensors designed to detect vital signs such as breathing. While these direct systems generally offer higher safety potential, the study found a critical weakness: none of the tested vehicles reliably detected a newborn in a rear-facing ISOFIX baby seat, even when using dummies designed to mimic breathing movements. Experts warn that while this technology serves as a useful safety net, it must not replace the vigilance of caregivers.
