Automotive service industry adapts to hybrid and electric vehicles

The rise of hybrid and electric vehicles is necessitating significant changes within automotive service centers. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, electric and hybrid models require specialized safety protocols due to high-voltage systems and complex electronic components.

Service providers must now implement specific risk assessment procedures during damage evaluation to identify high-voltage component damage and secure the vehicle before intervention. Technicians require specialized protective equipment and training to handle these systems safely.

At Top Lac, adaptation has involved technical upgrades and extensive staff training. Over 20 employees completed Tesla training programs, while other technicians attended courses on high-voltage systems and electric/hybrid vehicles organized by Bosch Romania at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. Florin Chivoiu, Service Director at Top Lac, noted that the shift requires new procedures and a higher level of technical competence to ensure repairs meet manufacturer safety specifications.
