Automotive technology advances introduce new safety and cybersecurity risks

As modern vehicles transition from purely mechanical machines to sophisticated, connected computers, new safety and security risks are emerging. Experts highlight concerns regarding electronic components and software vulnerabilities that did not exist in older models.

One significant concern involves electronic door handles. While flush designs improve aerodynamics, electronic failures can prevent occupants from exiting vehicles. Tesla has reportedly faced issues with inoperative electronic door handles in approximately 174,000 Model Y vehicles. In response to such risks, China has moved toward requiring mechanical door-opening mechanisms in new-energy vehicles to ensure emergency accessibility.

Additionally, the rise of automotive cybersecurity threats has introduced the risk of in-car malware. Attackers are increasingly targeting Android-based infotainment systems by exploiting over-the-air (OTA) update mechanisms. By compromising update servers or using man-in-the-middle attacks, malicious actors can install malware that operates with elevated privileges. This allows for data theft, ad fraud, and the creation of botnets using the vehicle's processing power, often without the driver's knowledge.
