Automotive technology research highlights data privacy and autonomous transit

A study by researchers at Northeastern University involving 21 vehicle models from 2022 to 2025 has revealed significant data privacy concerns. The findings indicate that nearly every manufacturer transmits data to third-party companies. Approximately one-quarter of vehicle applications shared personal information, including owner names, VIN numbers, and precise locations. Major technology firms such as Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft were identified among the recipients of this data.

In separate transport developments, scientists from Austria and China have developed the PECOP system, an autonomous on-demand public transit model. The system utilizes an electric minibus capable of carrying up to 15 passengers. Unlike traditional scheduled services, this system allows passengers to request rides via an app, similar to ride-sharing services. The vehicle employs cameras, radar, and 5G-connected road infrastructure to navigate and detect hazards.
