Vehicle tire maintenance and safety guidelines

Proper tire maintenance is essential for vehicle safety, fuel efficiency, and longevity. Maintaining correct tire pressure is a primary factor in preventing punctures and reducing fuel consumption, as underinflated tires increase resistance. Drivers should consult their vehicle manufacturer's specifications, often found on a sticker on the door pillar or in the manual, to determine the correct pressure based on load and vehicle type.

Beyond pressure, regular maintenance includes wheel alignment and balancing. Alignment adjusts suspension geometry to prevent the vehicle from pulling to one side and ensures even tire wear. Balancing distributes weight uniformly to prevent vibrations. Other key practices include periodic tire rotation to balance wear between front and rear tires, and monitoring tread depth to prevent hydroplaning.

Understanding tire markings is also critical for safety. Codes on the sidewall indicate width, aspect ratio, construction, diameter, load index, and speed rating. Specialized markings, such as the 3PMSF symbol, certify performance in winter conditions, whereas M+S indicates a specific tread pattern. Using tires that match the manufacturer's approved dimensions is necessary to ensure the proper functioning of safety systems like ABS and ESP.
