Autonomous driving regulations evolve in Italy and Europe

Regulatory frameworks for autonomous driving are evolving across Europe. In Italy, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has presented a draft for a new Highway Code to clarify the legal status of automated vehicles. This legislation aims to move beyond the current regulatory gray area by formally incorporating automated driving—specifically SAE levels 3 to 5—into the legal system. Technical specifics are expected to be defined via subsequent ministerial decrees in alignment with European Union standards.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system has reached a milestone of 100 million kilometers driven in Europe. Currently, the technology is only available in five EU member states: the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, and Belgium. While Tesla continues to accumulate data to improve its platform, the broader rollout across the European Union remains subject to ongoing regulatory debates and official decisions from Brussels.
