Autonomous vehicle technology expands through Milan pilots and Waymo growth
The autonomous vehicle sector is expanding through both local pilot programs and large-scale commercial operations. In Milan, the municipality has signed a three-year agreement with Niulinx, a company originating from the Politecnico di Milano, to test a hybrid autonomous model known as ‘Robo-Sharing’. This approach utilizes vehicles, potentially equipped Fiat 500s, that navigate autonomously at low speeds (up to 30 km/h) to reach a user, after which the passenger takes control to reach their destination. The vehicle then returns to its fleet or the next customer autonomously.
On a larger scale, Waymo has reported significant growth, surpassing 220 million autonomous miles and expanding its service to 11 U.S. cities, including Dallas, Houston, and San Francisco. While Waymo aims to scale production to tens of thousands of units annually, industry challenges are shifting from software reliability to operational logistics. Experts note that as robotaxi fleets grow, the industry must address the ‘pit lane’ problem: the logistical difficulty of maintaining, cleaning, and managing vehicles between passenger trips to ensure scalable service.
